Jerry's Journey

In 2012, the Whatcom MRC and the Friends of Birch Bay State Park (FOBBSP) - a non-profit located in Birch Bay, Washington - conceived the idea of developing an interpretive nature tour (Jerry’s Journey) at Birch Bay State Park. This project is partially supported by funds bequeathed from former MRC member and Birch Bay resident, Jerry Larson, with a goal to continue Jerry’s pursuit of watershed and habitat improvements in Birch Bay.

Jerry Larson was a member of the Whatcom (MRC) from 2001 to 2009 and was the chair of the Clam Subcommittee for much of his tenure. Jerry was passionate about restoring Birch Bay to the memory of his youth and was a tireless advocate for salmon, shellfish, and water quality. Jerry was the champion for several volunteer-powered MRC projects, including clam surveys, clam seeding, clam tent study, and water quality monitoring. Jerry died in early 2011 and bequeathed $10,000 to the Whatcom MRC to financially support local marine education and stewardship projects.
